Talkin' Baseball

The second season starts today with the first pitch in the Mini-Apple.

The Minnesota Twins host the Oakland A's.

Logically you have to go with the Twinkies because of Johan Santana, who'll probably win the A.L. Cy Young, and the fact they're on a hot streak.

Personally, I've rooted for the A's since 1969. That's the year Triple A baseball came back to Des Moines. The Iowa Oaks were affiliated with Oakland and we saw such stars as Joe Rudi, Vida Blue, Gene Tenace.

The St. Louis Cardinals nearly folded, but return to the playoffs to take on the San Diego Padres.

The Cards swept the San Diego last year, but the Padres are a better team. They're also riding a winning streak. It'll be the Padres.

My sentimental favorite is the Cardinals, it's the first team I rooted for when I got interested in baseball. Bob Gibson, Tim McCarver, Lou Brock, Orlando Cepeda, Julian Javier, Curt Flood, Dal Maxvill, Mike Shannon.

THE game is tonight! The New York Yankees host the Detroit Tigers.

Detoit did quite the nose dive after the All-Star game and lost the Cental Division lead they had held since May to the Twins on the last game of the season.

They're a good young, for the most part, ball club
but, they're playing the Bronx Bombers. Derek Jeter, Bobby Abreu, Gary Sheffield, Jason Giambi, Robinson Cano, Jorge Pasada, Johnny Damon and Alex Rodriguez.

The final playoff game is tomorrow as the Los Angeles Dodgers are in Shea to take on the New York Mets.

The Mets cruised for most of the year and struggled late, the Dodgers had to press to make the playoffs. A Dodge win wouldn't surprise me.

Obviously anything can happen on any given day, especially in a short (5 game) series.

Let's see if Baseball been berry, berry good to me
