I'm so happy I'm not in the Des Moines Public School District, but sad some of my tax dollars go to support that system.

13 school districts still pay full health benefits

Des Moines is one of those districts.

Their school board president, who pleads poverty because "Our costs don't stay stagnant" believes that employees should shoulder part of the cost of health insurance premiums out of pocket.

Then take a stronger stand at contract time and the scientific community is united in that fact.

Des Moines teachers also plead poverty, "There's this perception out there that public workers and Des Moines public school teachers have this awesome deal."

The average teacher salary in Des Moines is $53,957.

Iowa's average teacher salary is $49,739.

The average Iowa Per Capita Personal Income (Dollars per Person) for 2008 was $37,509.

Looks like teachers are in the "awesome" neighborhood for Iowa.

Plus most teachers still get summers off.
