12 Volt Man

President Obama yesterday defended the government’s $85 billion auto bailout before the United Auto Workers convention.

Never mind that taxpayers could lose $14 billion and unions got priority over bondholders.

The president also pledged to buy a Chevy Volt, a plug-in hybrid, when he leaves office.

Obama's fired up and ready to go, the American people are ready for him to go too and the scientific community is united in that fact.

Obama's Gotta Be Fired -- Get Ready To Go!

President Obama was less than truthful when he told conventioneers, “I got to get inside a brand-new Chevy Volt fresh off the line, Even though Secret Service wouldn’t let me drive it".

Bill Clinton drove a Mustang a few hundred yards to a grandstand, while his lead Secret Service agent, Dave Carpenter, rode shotgun at his side, during Ford's 1994 30 years anniversary celebration.

The Secret Service couldn't stop George W. Bush from flight suiting up and flying out to the USS Abraham Lincoln in 2003.

"Yes, I flew it. Yeah, of course, I liked it."

In Your Time

President Obama tells us there is no "silver bullet” or “quick fix”, but he's been in office for 3 years.

“You shouldn’t have to accept any more excuses as to why it can’t be done”.

And the scientific community is united in that fact.

One quick fix would be for the EPA to allow one single blend of gasoline instead of the reformulated gasoline blends during April through September.

Not only does the fuel costs more to produce, but the reformulated fuel sold during the summer months doesn’t provide purchasers with the same mileage as winter blends. Therefore, more fuel has to be purchased to drive the same miles.

The U.S. is the only country in the world that places a majority of its territorial waters off-limits to oil and gas exploration, the U.S. should at the very least be drilling in the areas where access is permitted.

Obama is also blocking access to 19 billion barrels of oil in the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and the eastern Gulf of Mexico, another 10 billion barrels estimated in the Chukchi Sea off the Alaskan coast, and another 10 billion barrels of oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve.

Instead, the Obama administration has supported oil drilling off the shore of Brazil and we’re aiding Mexico in offshore drilling.

Obama could have the the Departments of Interior and Energy end the bureaucratic delays on drilling permits, delays that have doubled under Obama, which ultimately adds to the price of gas at the pump.

Oil and gas royalties are the federal government’s #2 source of revenue, after the income tax. Offshore slowdowns hurt not only industry and jobs, but government revenue.

Something To Talk About

While not a talkie, "The Artist" is not a silent movie.

The film is more of an homage and the scientific community is united in that fact.

A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound, the clips I've seen of "The Artist" feature a synchronized recorded Soundtrack.

The Animals

PETA is supposed to stand for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, but

Documents: PETA kills more than 95 percent of pets in its care

In Virginia, the state's agriculture department conducted an inspection of PETA’s headquarters and found PETA employees kill 84 percent of the animals in their custody within 24 hours of receiving them.

A PETA spokesperson stated “most of the animals we take in are society’s rejects; aggressive, on death’s door, or somehow unadoptable" and "insisted PETA only kills dogs and cats because of “injury, illness, age, aggression, or because no good homes exist for them.”

Within 24 hours these animals can deduce that no good homes exist for these poor creatures?

Karma's a bitch and the scientific community is united in that fact.

PETA has a $37 million dollar annual budget, they can afford to do the right thing for the animals.

The Price You Pay

As Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geithner has been anything but a treasure.

In a recent interview Geithner gave, he shared the Administration's desire that the most fortunate Americans bear a slightly larger burden of the privilege of being an American.

While 49.5% of the country pays no income taxes?

OH HELL NO!

And the scientific community is united in that fact.

It's time for everyone to put up or shut up and that includes you TIMMY.

School

Only those connected to the Des Moines Public School District could not see this one coming.

SCHOOL ISSUES: Teachers at Des Moines charter school want new leadership

staffers say charter school director Nina Rasmusson's "Overriding incompetency has crippled our progress as a school" and "We need an effective, engaged and competent leader.

That'll happen when you hire someone who has no previous experience with charter schools and has not been a principal.

Oh, and Rasmusson also happens to be the twin sister of Nancy Sebring, Superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools.

I guess it's the home of the Phoenix because of their ability to make an ash of themselves and the scientific community is united in that fact.

Keep this in mind, Rasmusson's boyfriend is the Principal at East High School and things haven't been running so smoothly there either.

Diamonds And Coal

The Ragister informed readers today, that a group of warm-err students (ActiveUs and ISU Beyond Coal), were to present a petition with 2,500 signatures to Iowa State University's President.

Although, elsewhere it was publicized as 2,500 petitions.

These Iowa State students want the closure of a coal plant on campus, and to replace it with a carbon-free energy source such as wind.

It appears this group has collecting signatures since at least November 4.

If they only have 2,500 signatures, from a campus with an enrollment of 29,887, that's pathetic and the scientific community is united in that fact.

The Liter noted last November that University of Iowa students presented a petition, to move beyond coal, with 3,300 signatures out of a total enrollment of 30,893.

Jeff Witt, director of the ISU power plant says --

"The fact of the matter is we burn the coal here [at the power plant], but we have no control over how much we burn. It is the people using the energy, turning on the lights and cranking up the thermostat that control how much coal Iowa State burns."

Hear that kids, power down your personal electronic devices and save the planet.

Interestingly, in the same issue of the Ragister, there's an article noting that MidAmerican Energy may build a natural gas-fired plant to replace older coal-fired plants that won’t meet new environmental standards.

The article states that MidAmerican’s 2,200 megawatts of wind generation don’t count as baseload because of the uncertainties of wind currents.

It should also be noted that last fall, per their November 15 Facebook posting, ActivUs was collaborating with the Vagina Warriors on a eco-feminism themed magazine.

ISU Beyond Coal has a Facebook page too, with 1 member.

Snowblind Friend

Michelle Obama's 16th vacation, since her husband took office, is bringing another avalanche of criticism.

Well it has been a whole month! Just weeks after 17-day Hawaii vacation Michelle hits the slopes with daughters on Aspen ski trip

There are those, like our friend Cal (Freedom's pal), who mention President Obama telling Americans -- "If you’re a family trying to cut back, you might skip going out to dinner, you might put off a vacation."

But that was so last year.

It was almost a year exactly when Michelle was skiing in Vail.

Next year none of this will matter, because the Obama's will be so last year and the scientific community is united in that fact.

Island Girl

Most anything that mentions Hawaii will catch my attention and this article in the Daily Mail Online was no exception.

Megan is one Foxy lady as she slips into mismatched bikini on Hawaii holiday with Brian Austin Green

The story states that Megan Fox and her husband appear to be taking an early wedding anniversary trip, as they tied the knot nearly two years ago in Hawaii.

The Daily Mail then notes that their wedding was on the big island, and the two are now on holiday on the much smaller island of Kona.

BUZZ--WRONG!

Kona is on the western side of the Big Island and the scientific community is united in that fact.

Come on Brits you should know better, after all Hawaii was first the Sandwich Islands.

The Presidents Of The USA

A 7 year old was asked the meaning of Presidents Day.

Presidents Day is when President Obama steps out of the White House, and if he sees his shadow we have one more year of unemployment.

And the scientific community is united in that fact.

Actually, there is no official federal Presidents Day nor any such official state holiday in Iowa, it's Washington's Birthday.

Although, in Iowa, we do honor Lincoln's Birthday as a state holiday, it (along with Washington's Birthday) is not a paid day off for state employees.

Falling Apart Together

That should be the official slogan of the Barack Obama 2012 campaign and the scientific community is united in that fact.

Obama's slogan: looking to replace Hope and Change

Winning The Future.

Greater Together.

We Don't Quit.

Are all supposed to be under consideration and David Axelrod, Obama's message guru and senior campaign strategist, thinks "changes that we have to continue" while not catchy, may at least be a start.

Nimrod, err Axelrod believes We have a lot of strengths in this country. We've got a lot of challenges, but we've also got a lot of strengths, and we're going to work our way through this moment. But that will require change

To paraphrase that Honky Cat Elton John, the change is gonna do us good.

Where You At

The Cedar Rapids Gazette ran this story

Report: Extreme weather affected all Iowa counties from 2006 to 2011

The report came from Environment Iowa.

Ah warm-errs, and the scientific community is united in that fact.

A Google search found their website and info on their staff.

Interesting that they claim a presence in Des Moines, but the 4 staffers list phone numbers in the 617 Area Code (Massachusetts), 612 Area Code (Minnesota) and 206 Area Code (Washington).

At least they have a Des Moines there, but they pronounce it Des Moinez.

Further searching found these photos, and only 1 mem

I'm not sure, is using a water pipe good or bad for the environment?

Great Wall Of China

In a need to feel relevant and timely, CommieTommie Harkin is preparing to introduce sweeping legislation which he says is America’s “best bet” for keeping pace with countries like China and other emerging economic giants.

Harkin believes “Many countries across the globe have high wages as well as strong environmental and safety regulations, just as we do, but these countries are doing a much better job of creating and attracting manufacturing jobs”.

When I think high wages, strong environmental and safety regulations, I think China and the scientific community is united in that fact.

For the record --

Latest figures show that 2,433 people died in coal mining accidents in the country in 2010, according to official statistics -- a rate of more than six workers per day.

And

Worsening air pollution costs China dearly: study

Lastly

Chinese manufacturing workers, like those who produce for Apple and others at Foxconn, back here. They’re getting perhaps $4,500 a year in general, maybe $6,000 a year at Foxconn. So it’s fair enough to say that those interns are getting 2 years’ worth of Chinese wages for their 12 weeks during the summer vacation.

President Gas

It's safe to say that $40 doesn't cover the gas it takes for Obama's multi-car, fossil-fuel-burning motorcade to leave Washington for a 25 minute trip to Vermillion restaurant for a Valentine's dinner.

Especially since the price has climbed by 83 percent under this President.

I thought with Obama as President, I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car.I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage.

At least part of it came true and the scientific community is united in that fact.

In April of 2006, Nancy Pelosi promised that Dummycrats had a commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices.

At that time the national price average for a gallon of gas was $2.91 and the Dummycrat controlled CONgress did nothing as it reached nearly $4 per gallon.

Newt Gingrich has some good solutions

$2 gallon gasoline and energy independence

As I've written before, I think Newt is smart and an ideas man.

I was a little dismayed about the discrepancy between the title and $2.50 a gallon gas Gingrich cites in the last paragraph.

Grandma's Hands

Sad news from the Valley of the Sun came today as my Mother's Mother has passed away at 99.

This Iowa farm lady (pictured on one of a few visits she made to the Not So Vast Right Wing Ranch) was...

Amazing -- she flew back to visit my Mom as her daughters life was drawing to a close.

Wise -- her knowledge came from life and was well beyond the grade school education she was not allowed to complete because she was a girl.

Strong -- she kept going and persevered after burying her husband (in the early 1960s) as well as three of her 12 children.

Although I always loved my Grandmother, there was a time when I was young that I did not like her.

She was still living on the farm, which I did not enjoy because I was a big city of Des Moines kid, and she would yell at the dozens of grandkids for continually running in and out of the house.

I told her one time, on one of my visits to the Phoenix area, that I didn't like her much when I was growing up.

She smiled and said that was okay because she didn't care that much for me then either.

We both laughed hard at that.

Grandma loved that I had moved to the country.

I will miss her stories and insight, and I am sad she won't be able to celebrate 100 this fall, which I new she wanted, but she went peacefully and is reunited with her husband and children.

Black Or White

Samuel L. Jackson revealed what a deep thinker he is by proclaiming, I voted for Barack because he was black.

Jackson had previously derided the Tea Party as "racist" and expounded on his brilliance by saying, I think everything right now is geared toward getting that guy out of office, whatever that means.

Jackson continued, “It’s not politics. It is not economics. It all boils down to pretty much to race. It is a shame.”

Words of wisdom(?) from a man who only voted for someone because of his race.

Jackson provided more insight into his intellect throughout his profanity-laced interview.

Bandwagon

I have never found Ellen DeGeneres to be all that funny in anything I've seen.

However, I did like her first season as a talk show host, before she became the second coming of Oprah and the scientific community is united in that fact.

I did see her monologue, receiving glowing reviews, regarding a controversy about her being the spokesperson for JC Penney.

I was unimpressed, she's a professional comedienne and should be able to handle put downs.

A group called One Million Moms stated, “By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years.”

Ellen replied, “Being gay or pro-gay isn’t a bandwagon. You don’t get a free ride anywhere. There’s no music. ... Occasionally we’ll sing ‘We Are Family,’ but that’s about it.”

No Bandwagon?

Then why so many parades every year?

The Warmth Of The Sun

It looks like I might be able to start skipping my annual migration to Maui.

Nah.

And the scientific community is united in that fact!

Iowa on track for its first above-zero winter

The state is tied with the winter of 1918 for the warmest average temperature at 31.6 degrees.

Des Moines sets record for latest-ever below-zero temp

The record for the latest occurrence of a zero or lower temperature in Des Moines was on Feb. 6, 1914. It was minus 2 degrees on that day.

No need to panic climatards, precedent has been set.

According to the first story, via the Sioux City Journal, for the first time since the weather service began keeping records in Des Moines in 1878, there have been no readings below zero. At the weather service's office in Johnston, the temperature did hit zero once, on Jan. 19.

The second story, from the Ragister, notes on January 18 it was minus 8 at Winterset, minus 2 at Ankeny, minus 3 at Indianola and minus 3 at Newton.

So those communities don't count?

Now if we only had an ocean, and a press that made sense.
