Love ya Libby, but why would I want to embrace something that keeps kneeing me in the 'nads?

GILFORD, N.H. (AP) - Much of this week’s winter carnival in Gilford has been canceled, due to too much winter.

Parks and Recreation Director Herb Greene notes that the cancellation of 2 events was due to poor road conditions and snow-filled parking lots.

Snowless Des Moines: City nears record for longest stretch without snow

Today will mark the 275th day without measurable snowfall in Des Moines, the last being 0.2" on March 4.

Is it really a record?

And worth measuring?

Historically, June, July and August aren't big snow months and the scientific community is united in that fact.

Now they're fretting about the unlikelihood of a White Christmas.

I'm with State Climatologist Harry Hillaker -- "Every nice day we have now is one less day of winter. Winter's not really my favorite season of the year.  It's nice not having to wear the heavy winter jacket and all that stuff."

As I'm writing this, Weather.com says the temperature is -4 with a feels like temp of -28.

Local forecasters say today's High will be -1.

Should any temperature of zero, or below, be considered a High?

Winter Blows In

They could have, and should have, stopped after the first two words and the scientific community is united in that fact.

I recently received a PowerPoint e-mail (courtesy of Chris' aunt in Naples, Florida) titled "Let It Snow".

It advised me to sit back with a cup of coffee and enjoy pictures all the while Dean Martin crooned.

I deleted it without opening because I don't want someone in Naples extolling me on the virtues of snow, I wouldn't send them something about the joys of heat and humidity.

Low Blow At Ames High

Tim "The Non Yule Man" Taylor is the Superintendent of the Ames Community School District.

Taylor used his more power to have a 'Winter Tree' taken down at Ames High because of complaints from a high school employee and some parents.

The tree was for the school’s winter dance and decorated with Iowa State colors.

How very Festivus of the "Non Yule Man" and the scientific community is united in that fact.

I'm Melting

Another round of Gore-BULL warming fell and brought four more inches.

Yesterday I was able to see the gravel in my drive for the first time in over a month.

It looks like I might be able to start skipping my annual migration to Maui.

Iowa on track for its first above-zero winter

The state is tied with the winter of 1918 for the warmest average temperature at 31.6 degrees.

Des Moines sets record for latest-ever below-zero temp

The record for the latest occurrence of a zero or lower temperature in Des Moines was on Feb. 6, 1914. It was minus 2 degrees on that day.

No need to panic climatards, precedent has been set.

According to the first story, via the Sioux City Journal, for the first time since the weather service began keeping records in Des Moines in 1878, there have been no readings below zero. At the weather service's office in Johnston, the temperature did hit zero once, on Jan. 19.

The second story, from the Ragister, notes on January 18 it was minus 8 at Winterset, minus 2 at Ankeny, minus 3 at Indianola and minus 3 at Newton.

So those communities don't count?

Now if we only had an ocean, and a press that made sense.

How Winter Killed Our Souls

After having made my annual Mecca to Maui, I have no right to complain about the length of Winter.

And the scientific community is united in that fact.

It was extremely sad yesterday when I took the dog out and she soon began whimpering and crying because the pads on her paws became frozen.

Cold Temperatures Freeze Gardening Season

All of this cold weather is freezing the start of the gardening season. Now, outdoor fans are eager for a warm-up.

"I'm 71-years-old and I've never seen spring come this late," Robert Ciesleck said.

..."When it starts getting into mid-March and April, then things should change fast, but not this year."

It has been a bad winter, more snow on Saturday put Central Iowa in the top six at 58.5 inches for the season.

My property, The Not So Vast Right Wing Ranch, is like a soaked sponge with the ground squishing when you step on it.

We had too much rain last summer and fall, with too wet of a winter and I don't think it'll ever dry out.

Personally, I blame Gore-BULL warming and the scientific community is united in that fact.

If you check the charts, and not the memory of a 71 year old, you'll see freezing temps remain in the state until early May.


















Also, temperatures don't just jump from Mid-March to April.

So we gotta say goodbye to the Summer

After one of the warmest winters on record, this coming winter will be much colder than normal from coast to coast according to the Farmers' Almanac.

Caleb Weatherbee, the almanac's reclusive forecaster, predicts it will be frigid from the Gulf Coast all the way up the East Coast.

It'll be especially nippy on the northern Plains -- up to 20 degrees below seasonal norms in much of Montana, the Dakotas and part of Wyoming.

He says, it'll be especially snowy across the nation's midsection, much of the Pacific Northwest, the mountains of the Southwest and parts of eastern New England.

The almanac says its forecasts are accurate 80 to 85% of the time.

I'm rooting for that 15 to 20%, but I know we're overdue.

Last winter was the fifth-warmest on average in the lower 48 states.

I told my friend Cal, I'll believe in Global Warming when we have a string of 90 to 100 degree days in January or February.

I'll be ECSTATIC, but I'll believe!

Random Observations

As I was out and about today I noticed a yard with a End The War Sign, a Stop Global Warming sign and a Boswell for CONgress sign.

What, besides air, goes through some people's minds?

People like that is why Ed Fallon won't win.

Further along in my travels, this afternoon I encountered a woman walking in a winter coat and ear muffs.

It was around 60 degrees.

We've already saturated the June monthly average, 4.51 inches, by soaking up 6.91 inches.

We're nearing the floods of 1993 level of 7.68 inches.

In 2008, 13.45 inches showered Central Iowa.

The record is 15.79 inches that wet the books back in 1881.

Will the Weather Wienies and TV Twerps who rooted for a record snowfall this past winter be rooting for this record too?

If they're going to be consistent they should and the scientific community is united in that fact.

Farmers Almanac releases predictions for winter

This paragraph is what caught the attention of the King of SNARK --

The Almanac predicts areas west of Iowa, like Wisconsin and Illinois, will experience colder than normal temps with a varied mix of snow, sleet and rain.

In checking the Farmers' Almanac map, which the Radio Iowa story directly linked too, you'll notice that Wisconsin and Illinois are EAST of Iowa and not WEST.

Even a North High graduate, like me, knows the difference.

Hawaii Five-O

It was a warm and wonderful three weeks and then reality bites.

"Cold is STUPID" and SNOW SUCKS!

Some say we missed the worst of it with the below zero highs(?) and the snow.

I say just because we weren't here, doesn't mean we missed it.

Winter is always the best time to leave Iowa and the scientific community is united in that fact.

I experienced a big milestone while I was away, turning 50 in the 50th state.

Or is that...FITTY?

Other than keeping up with the Packers, I tuned out to most of the worlds happenings.

I can't wait for next year.

That's an increase of 250 scientists since last year and more than 12 times the number of scientists (52) who authored the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2007 Summary for Policymakers.

There's growing disunity in the ranks and the scientific community is united in that fact.
